The upper course of the River Kupa
The River Kupa is a karst river and another mountainous beauty which originates from the small karst turquoise green lake below the place called Razloge in Gorski kotar and it is close to the Croatian-Slovenian border.
Some hundred meters downstream from its source, to the right it receives water from the intermittent torrential stream of Kraševica, further down to the left - from the intermittent stream of Sušica; it then turns north-east and finally to the north. At the source it is a fast river, whilst several kilometres further (down) it calms down and becomes more peaceful, intersected by many artificial water-falls which in the pastwere used to start up water mills and saw mills. It becomes a border river with Slovenia at the mouth of its left tributary Čabranka.
The upper course of the River Kupa breaks through a forest canyon. At places the canyon stretches wider – this is where fertile fields are located; a further canyon then follows the way through a lowland area up to the point where it flows into the River Sava by Sisak.
